Lemon brandy

  • 2 LEMONS
  • 150 GRAM SUGAR
  • 2 CUPS BRANDY
  • 1 CAN SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK
  • 125 GRAM BUTTER
  • 2 TBSP CACAO
  • 100 GRAM CHOCOLATE SPRINKLES

Cut the peel off the lemon but do not use the white part. Press the juice out of the lemons, heat it and dissolve the sugar. Put this syrup in a glass pot, together with the brandy and the lemon peel and stir. Close the pot and leave it for at least 2 weeks before drinking and strain before use.

Fladderak was invented by Anthonie van Fladerack in 1572 and the Groningen based firm Hooghoudt took over the production on a larger scale. When it threatened to stop the production in the 20th century, there were so many protests that they kept producing the liqueur. You can use this liqueur to prepare the winter drink Pierewaai.

Put the condensed milk, the cacao and the butter together and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes, stir well. Allow the mixture to cool down and form little balls. Roll them through the chocolate sprinkles.

This is a Brazilean recipe. 15 November is Independence Day in Brazil. On 15 November 1889 came an end to the Empire of Brazil which meant a new Brazilian Republic.
