RAMSES SQUARE
Ramses Square in Cairo is probably, right behind Tahrir Square, the city’s most crowded place. In 2006, the square underwent a major face-lift, and the enormous statue of Ramses II, the namegiver of the place, was removed towards a different part of town. Not that things have improved a lot. The Copts in Egypt are even worse. Their fast consists of 55 days, in which they are not allowed to eat meat, fish, eggs and a few other food items. Of the Copts I have met, however, the majority confessed to only fast one week or one day, and some of them even thought that God would not mind if they did not fast at all. That does not refrain them from starting their Easter Sunday at 12 o’clock at night, with a copious dinner of almost only meat dishes. After all, you must enjoy the good things in life.

SHAM EL NESSIM
Today, the Egyptians celebrate “Sham El Nessim”. This festival probably already was known in the time of the pharaoh’s. It was then called “Shamo” and the old Egyptians dedicated this day to the beginning of life. Somewhere in history, the Shamo appeared to coincide with Coptic Easter, and the two were united, in the sense that Sham El Nessim became “the day after Easter”. When the Islam entered the scene, the day was renamed “Sham El Nessim” meaning something like “a breath of fresh air”. Nowadays, it is celebrated by all, Coptics and Muslims alike. Where they can be a bit nasty too each other sometimes in daily life, on this day they are brothers. If you ask, people will tell you that the festival has a Christian background, but in practice, it has become a spring festival, much like Navruz in Uzbekistan. People go out to parks and nature to pick-nick. They eat salted fish, green onions and colored eggs. They make music and sometimes dance. Egyptians are good at partying!
Sometimes, more serious Muslim men utter the suggestion, that this feast should be abolished. Let us hope, that they forget that thought as quickly as it came up. There is more than enough fighting in the world already as it is.
