The pyramid in Maidoum is not half as famous as the pyramids in Sakkarah, let alone Gizeh. At first sight you would think it is a concrete bunker, but once you come to know the age and history of it, it will be a different story. The pyramid is situated between Cairo and Fayoum and is also called "the collapsed pyramid". The pyramid was most probably built in the time of Snefru (4th Dynasty, 2613-2494 BC). Under the pyramid, statues of Prince Rahotep and his wife Nofret and the "Maidoum geese frieze" were found, which now are displayed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The Maidoum pyramid is very close to the railway line going from Cairo to Fayoum and vice versa; the train seems to have emerged from 300 years ago and the picture could have easily been taken in the Wild West. Even though we were the only visitors and it did not look like anybody had been there or was coming soon, there was a guard on the hill facing the pyramid and we were guided by a group of policemen, who insisted on bringing us back to the highway. We already expected the request for baksheesh, and could not help laughing at their disappointed faces, when we suddenly made a U-turn and managed to speed away without paying.
