WORLDCOOK'S TRAVELS - THE SOUK in EGYPT
Recipes from Egypt Travel to Egypt Travel to other countries

The souk in Egypt, like the bazaar in Uzbekistan, sells everything you can think of and apart from that, also things you cannot imagine. Fishes from river and sea, big and small; clams and other shellfish, so much alive that they are jumping up and down in their plastic boxes, unaware of their sorry fate, which is ever so near. Many kinds of fruits and vegetables can be found, arranged beautifully in the shape Egyptians like most, the pyramid. Also dates, olives and spices are everywhere and give a special scent to the air.

But also more durable goods are for sale, like dresses and underwear, even very sexy underwear. Ladies, dressed in black, are looking curiously at these articles, which makes you realize that the black dress is only the street-code. But also long dresses are available, which can be worn by everyone and everywhere. Chairs, wardrobes and tables are set up in the street and if you like gold and shiny things, you can fill your house for next to nothing, at least that is what the vendor will tell you. When we are walking around, we attract lots of attention. Vendors are smiling and waving and pointing at their smiling selves calling "sura, sura!" (picture). If they are beautiful enough, I honor their request.

Animals are available in all sorts and shapes. Big boxes full of live chicks, ducks, turkeys and rabbits. The rabbits are held by the ears to see if they are worth their money. Groups of people gather around the saleswoman and endless discussions take place, before the poor creature changes hands. Surely it will not make it until Christmas. The same goes for the sheep and goats, which are not kept for their milk. A nice kebab will go well with the vegetables, bought on the same souk.
