Usually when I travel, I ask as many people as possible about their recipes, cooking and culinary habits. Many Kenyans told me, that they actually like Tanzanian food better. To my surprise therefore, I discovered a number of similarities, like the love for mandazi and also the abundance of curries, most probably brought in by the Indians who firstly came to Kenya for trade, after which they did not leave the country.
Also, you see traces of history in the Kenyan dishes. Mombasa was established by Arab traders in the 15th century, and became dominated by Portuguese a century later. In 1824, Kenya became a British protectorate; the British brought in the Asians to build the Ugandan railway. this may be one of the reasons why noodles often appear on the Kenyan menu.
Special days in Kenya, on which you may serve this food, are Madaraka Day on the 1st of June; 20 October, Kenyatta day; and 12 December, when the country became independent in 1963. Click on culinary calendar for more links between cooking and worldwide celebration.
