Café Liégois

Apart from waffles, Luik (Liège) is famous for its Pékèt. This is an alcoholic drink based on grain, a little like Dutch gin, made of wheat, hops and juniper berries. its alcohol percentage varies between 22 and 35%. Sometimes it is colored and flavored with fruit or flowers. Pékèt means spicy in the language from Luik, a language which, by the way, hardly anybody knows nowadays. There is even a special Pékèt bar. On the 15th of August, Luik has a celebration in its "Quartier d'Outremeuse" where pékèt is served; adolescent even add it to their soft drinks.
Waffles were traditionally served on the 1st of January. On Worldcook's New Year page you will find New Year recipes from all over the world. Click here for more recipes on the culinary calendar.
